I can't say that I was surprised by the lack of creativity and individual flair from the men this year at Golden Globes, because quite frankly, there never really is much of either. Usually we see a parade of penguins - term for tuxedo and not meant to put down the actual species - that seem more run of the mill bore fest than anything else.
So I'm left to point out a few highlights and some real misses.

Best dressed goes to Ryan Seacrest. Is that really possible? He's not even an actor. Yes of course it is possible. Ryan Seacrest is always well dressed and well groomed. For years I have noticed how most times at awards show red carpets, Ryan is actually looking better than most of the male stars he is interviewing - except for George Clooney - and this year was no exception. Staying current without being trendy and knowing what works for him allows him to have a very definitive style which never disappoints. Not a single flaw on Mr. Seacrest.

George Clooney! I really have nothing to say except; bravo Mr. Clooney. You keep the Hollywood mystique alive. You never disappoint when it comes to red carpet perfection!

Clive Owen could have been right up there with Ryan Seacrest. He is clearly well groomed and the tuxedo fits impeccably. However I want to point out, how a cummerbund would of solve the issue of the gap from the white shirt peering out of the jacket. Cummerbunds are meant for tuxedos and in this case would have made a real difference.

Leonardo DiCaprio could also very easily fall into Best Dressed category. A lot of times actors are working on other films which makes it challenging or even impossible for them to be clean shaven at these awards shows. That is understandable. This could be the case with Leo this year, so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on his grooming. But there is also the buttoning-the-last-button-of-the-jacket issue; completely unnecessary and in Mr. DiCaprio's case it actually pulls the jacket too tight around the mid section creating pleads where there shouldn't be any.

A red and blue stripe tie is never appropriate when wearing a tuxedo. Even if the tuxedo is navy, a collegiate red and blue stripe tie is never the proper choice. It could be argued that personal style is absolutely objective and that is true. However when it comes to proper attire for a black tie affair, this will never do. Love the tuxedo, perfect shirt, groomed beautifully and one of Hollywood's best looking character actors, but Vigo the tie is not working.

I'm not a fan of the three-piece tuxedo with pleated pants. It's reminiscent of the rococo period when too much was never enough. Sometimes less is just right and this is one of those times. I love the full beard and the longish almost unmanageable hair - though it is absolutely managed perfectly - and I would of even been partial to the pleated pants, but once the vest was added, the whole look fell apart. And yet Gerard Butler manages to always look sexy. Some guys have all the luck!

And so to end on a high note, I tip my hat to Jean Dujardin, the French export who in his simple wide lapel tuxedo and slicked back hair looks the part of the newest leading man in Hollywood. Perhaps because he is. There's is something classic, timeless and simple about his look which proves my theory that you don't need to do more than find your style and feel comfortable in what you are wearing to look your absolute best.
So this is all I have for now.
We say so long to the Golden Globes and its dashing actors. But is not good-bye to the red carpet parade of stars, because there's always the Oscars when I am sure, we will have plenty to discuss and I will do my best to once again share my point of view with you.

ReplyDeleteJohnny Depp is a one-of-a-kind character that has no rival nor anyone to compare him to. He dances to the beat of his own drum and usually it is a horrific dance, however, I though at this year's Golden Globes, he looked the best he has ever looked.
ReplyDeleteThe jewelry was toned down, the hair was unruly but manageable, the tuxedo fit well except the pants were too long - and he was well groomed; for Johnny Depp, that is.
What about Ashton Kutcher?

ReplyDeleteGreat question. There's a way of being creative when sporting formal wear without losing the proper dress etiquette. For instance a tuxedo in a color other than black; a silver or white tie, are two ways in which a man can add flare to his look. Creating a retro black tie look is another way.
